Icy Barrel Of A Loaded Gun (Deaville/Breen) (Taller Dog Pub and Breensongs Pub BMI)
Well, my grandpa held me upon his knee
he said “little girl, what do want to be”
I told him “I was born to run from the icy barrel of a loaded gun
He said “Don’t you want to be Papa’s girl and let me touch
your pretty curls?”
If I said I didn’t want to touch that way I knew that there would
be hell to pay
Well, my grandpa held me upon his knee
and I’ll never forget what he did to me
In the dark of night nowhere to run from the
icy barrel of a loaded gun
CHORUS 1
Now, I remember the vow I made the day
I was old enough to run away
Nobody’s ever gonna hurt me now
It’s something’ that I will not allow
When I return and I will someday I’m gonna show the man that I am not afraid
Gonna let him know that I will never run
from the Icy Barrel Of A Loaded Gun
I fell in love when I turned fifteen
to a man who’s anger really frightened me
he’d knocked me out whenever he got high
so I kept on living to pacify
He was there when i walked out the door
with a crazy look and a forty four
Once again I knew I had to run from the
Icy Barrel Of A Loaded Gun
CHORUS 2
Now, I remember the vow I made the day I was
strong enough to run away
Nobody’s ever gonna hurt me now
It’s something’ that I will not allow
When I return and I will someday I’m gonna
show the man that I am not afraid
Gonna let him know that I will never run
from the Icy Barrel Of A Loaded Gun
Well, my grandpa held me upon his knee
and I’ll never forget what he did to me
he raised me in a world of shame
where I always thought it was me to blame
CHORUS 3
And I remember the vow I made that day
now the peace I’ve found has let me say
“Nobody’s ever gonna hurt me now
It’s something’ that I will not allow”
the day i returned was the day I won
let the secret out that I kept so long
he’ll never admit that he caused me pain
and my mama too, but I broke the chain
‘cause nobody should ever have to run
from the Icy Barrel Of A Loaded Gun
‘cause nobody should ever have to run
from the Icy Barrel Of A Loaded Gun
I co-wrote this song with Darcie and played electric guitar and sang on the original version from her 1991 release "Last Hitchhiker On The Lost Highway." The song and Darcie garnered a win in the New Folk Competition at the Kerrville Folk Festival in 1991. The song was later re-cut by Darcie for her "Tornado In Slo Mo" Release on Redwing Records in 1999.
