Electric Cello)
I watched him walk to his car
open up the hood
Check the oil, check the radiator
give it one last look
Then turn and with a smile
said “don’t wait up for me”
then he held out his hand
I gave him the keys
Hey, wait a minute
where’d the little things go
little hands, little smile, little nose
Where’d the little things go
I could feel my heart racing
as I watched him pull away
“A fine boy you’ve got there”
I heard the neighbor say
I smiled choked back a tear
and said “you know you’re right”
but I couldn’t help thinking
as he drove out of sight
Hey, wait a minute
where’d the little things go
little hands, little smile, little nose
Where’d the little things go
Well, his Mom and me we asked each other
where the time had gone
and the little cars and fire trucks
and bikes on the lawn
Went up to bed early
but didn’t sleep at all
just listened to the ticking of
the clock up on the wall
Then suddenly the sweetest sound
we could ever know
the squealing of his brakes
in the driveway below
